BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
I have been freelance since January 2006, following many years of part-time freelancing whilst doing full-time jobs.
I started writing in the 1990s, I was a Design & Technology teacher at the time specialising in the high tech end of the UK D&T syllabus - electronics, computer aided design, computer control and so on. I wrote several pieces for the Times Educational Supplement and three little D&T Project books for an educational publisher.
Techies that are more than semi-literate are quite rare and being one of them landed me a job with a small software company where I was nominally Support Manager but with no-one to manage since I did all the support. I also wrote; catalogue blurbs, advertising copy, advertorials for trade mags, training courses, user guides. And I started freelancing for computer magazines.
By the end of 2005 the tension between freelancing and salaried work was getting a bit much and following a disagreement with my employer about a potential conflict of interest I left and went solo.
